VOLUNTEER TRAINING: VAWA Full Day Workshop

December 12 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm

As The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) celebrates its 30th anniversary, it is important to refresh—or learn for the first time—how this law can make a significant impact in the lives of immigrant survivors. VAWA has been amended over the years to include special provisions for battered immigrants of all genders, allowing them to gain legal immigration status without relying on their abusive U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident spouses, parents, or children. In this full day workshop, we will offer three sessions for new and veteran volunteers who are interested in representing immigrant survivors of gender-based violence in submitting a VAWA self-petition.

A sample workshop schedule is included below, you are welcome to attend as many workshop sessions as your schedule permits:

Session 1: VAWA 101: Everything you need to know to represent an immigrant survivor in their VAWA case: (9:30 AM – 12:00 PM)
Lunch: Provided (12:00 PM – 12:30 PM)
Session 2: Special Topic: Best practices for client interviewing and fact gathering (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM)
Session 3: Special Topic: VAWA, U visa, I-751 waiver: which would your client benefit from? (1:30 PM – 2:30 PM)

*Special Topics are just examples of what may be offered on the day of the training.
