ANNOUNCING NEW PROGRAM: RELIEF IMMIGRATION SERVICES

Contact: Cindy Kim, RELIEF Managing Attorney, ckim@dcvlp.org

Washington DC | October 2, 2019 The DC Volunteer Lawyers Project (DCVLP) is pleased to announce that the Mayor’s Office recently awarded us an Immigrant Justice Legal Services grant to help start a new program, RELIEF. RELIEF will provide desperately needed immigration legal assistance to domestic violence victims and other vulnerable residents in the District.

Abusers often falsely tell their victims that reporting domestic violence will have negative consequences on their immigration status. RELIEF seeks to dispel this myth by providing extensive outreach into the community to inform victims of their immigration options. RELIEF attorneys will help victims navigate the complex immigration system with the goal of independence and long-term safety and security for themselves and their families.

RELIEF clients will also have access to DCVLP’s other services designed to help families achieve safety and stability in their lives. DCVLP attorneys assist domestic violence victims with protection orders, custody of children, guardianship, public benefits, and more while our advocates provide safety planning, crisis intervention and thoughtful referrals to our many community partners. All services are free.

Victims needing immigration assistance may visit us at one of our Domestic Violence & Family Legal Clinics located throughout the District or call our Legal Info Line at (202) 425-7573. More information is available at www.dcvlp.org.
